If you want to open more career opportunities for yourself, discover the benefits of earning professional AV credentials with AVIXA’s Certified Technology Specialist™ (CTS) program.

Let’s break down what the CTS is and the benefits of getting certified.

What is the CTS Program?

This credential demonstrates AV knowledge and opens doors to the industry. In pro AV, the Certified Technology Specialist™ (CTS) program is the leading professional credential – with more than 14,000 CTS holders around the globe! Since it’s ANAB-accredited to the ISO 17024 standard, you can be assured it meets the highest standards for demonstrating and verifying you or your team’s skill set.

For many years, individuals, companies, and customers have recognized the CTS® certification for its credibility and integrity. Companies hiring qualified AV professionals know you have met specific standards by passing the CTS exam. So, a proven, reliable credential like CTS could make you (and your business) a top contender in various AV projects.

CTS Breakdown

Earning a Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) credential involves several steps. Here’s a simple breakdown:

1. Understand the CTS Credential

  • Research: Learn about the different CTS credentials available: CTS, CTS-D (Design), and CTS-I (Installation). Each certification has unique prerequisites and focuses. Ensure that the certification you’re pursuing aligns with your career goals and job roles.
  • Experience: Although there are no formal prerequisites for the basic CTS exam, obtaining some experience in audiovisual (AV) technology can be helpful. Six months of experience is recommended before taking the exam, but this is not required. Consider taking AV training courses online or in-person to gain a solid foundation.

2. Study for the Exam

  • Resources: AVIXA provides official study materials. This includes:
  • Practice: Take practice exams to familiarize yourself with the exam format and types of questions. Utilize sites like Xchange to help you form study groups to discuss topics and exchange knowledge. On Xchange, we also post CTS sample questions. Also, explore different study methods to find the type that works best for you.

3. Schedule the Exam

  • Account: You’ll have to register for an account on the AVIXA website. Candidates must apply through AVIXA before scheduling exams.
  • Schedule: Once you’re approved by the AVIXA Certification office, you will be able to schedule your exam through Pearson VUE, the testing partner for CTS certification. You can choose from various test centers around the world or opt for online proctoring. Testing is also provided at InfoComm every year in the US. InfoComm test scheduling is only available 120 days prior to the show, but candidates with a paid application and exam eligibility can schedule an appointment for InfoComm through Pearson VUE’s site as well.
  • Exam Fee: Be prepared to pay the exam fee, which varies based on membership status with AVIXA and exam type. While pursuing certifications can be pricey, set aside what money you can as an investment into your future. Additionally, companies can invest in the certification for employees, so it’s worth asking to see if it aligns with the values of your company!

4. Take the Exam

  • Prepare: Ensure you have all necessary documents. Also, review the test center or online proctoring guidelines.
  • Exam Day: Arrive on time, stay calm, and focus on answering each question to the best of your ability.

5. Receive Your Results

  • Immediate Results: You can expect to receive immediate results upon completion.
  • Printed Certificates: Printed certificates are mailed within a few weeks.
  • Retests: Candidates who do not pass the CTS exam can retake the exam two more times by submitting the CTS Exam Retest online application no later than 120 days from the date of the last exam attempt. There is a retest fee, but it’s a reduced payment.

6. Maintain Your Certification

  • Renewal: After passing the initial exam, CTS certifications will need to be renewed every three years. You can earn AVIXA Renewal Units (RUs) through continuing education and professional development activities. Submit your renewal application along with proof of earned Renewal Units and pay the necessary renewal fee. Click here to learn more about renewing.

Additional Tips

  • Network: Join AV industry associations and participate in events for networking opportunities and further learning. Xchange is a great networking hub too!
  • Stay Updated: Keep up to date with the latest AV technology trends and innovations, which can also count toward your Renewal Units.

Is Getting Your CTS Actually Worth It?

That question is best answered by those who have their CTS. AVIXA spoke with AV professionals to see what they had to say about their certifications. Read statements and tips from current CTS holders themselves:

“For the go-getters, the dreamers, and the tech enthusiasts, AV certifications are the turbo boosters your career needs. They're a testament to your dedication, opening doors to new opportunities and accelerating your journey up the career ladder,” said Mohannad Mousa, Project Manager at Maktabi Tech, who has more than eight years of experience in the ELV and AV field.

“As a proud member of AVIXA and holder of the CTS, CTS-I, and CTS-D certifications, I can attest to the value these credentials bring to the audiovisual industry,” said Alexis Bou Farhat, ELV Projects Manager at BLINQTECH, who has more than 15 years of experience in the AV industry. “For companies, having certified professionals with credentials like CTS-D and CTS-I can set them apart in the competitive AV landscape, demonstrating a commitment to high-quality systems design, installation, and customer service. Regarding tips for the exams, I recommend practicing time management with mock exams, joining study groups for peer support, and paying close attention to keywords when answering questions.”

“As a result of the certifications I hold, I was promoted within my organization very quickly. I've even started a career development plan to help all our technicians become CTS certified,” said Matthew OReilly, Manager of Events and Classroom Experience at the University of Toronto, who has more than seven years of AV experience. As far as taking the CTS exam, I would say find the type of studying that works for you and don't just study from a book because it may have worked for someone else. Sometimes figuring out how you study is half the battle!”
